Hey friends,

If you stepped outside this week and immediately regretted it, you’re not alone. Egypt’s surprise dust storm (pictured above) turned skies orange, cars beige, and group chats into weather commentary threads.

Now that the sand has (mostly) settled, let’s get into the stories that shaped the week.

Egypt has unveiled a new round of cabinet appointments, marking one of the most significant government reshuffles in recent years. The changes come amid efforts by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s administration to inject fresh expertise into key ministries and accelerate policy priorities ahead of ongoing economic and social reforms.

New leadership: The reshuffle includes appointments in ministries covering investment, finance, trade, and youth affairs, bringing in both experience and fresh faces. The selections reflect a mix of continuity and strategic recalibration, as Cairo seeks to tackle challenges ranging from economic growth to digital transformation and public services.

INTEREST RATES | CENTRAL BANK
CENTRAL BANK CUTS INTEREST RATES AS INFLATION COOLS

Egypt’s Central Bank (CBE) Monetary Policy Committee cut key interest rates by 1 percentage point at its latest meeting, marking a shift toward monetary easing after a prolonged tightening cycle. The overnight deposit rate now stands at 19 percent, with corresponding reductions across main policy rates.

Liquidity & policy shift: The CBE also lowered the reserve requirement for commercial banks to 16 percent, injecting additional liquidity into the banking system. The decision comes as inflation shows sustained moderation and economic activity gains traction across key sectors.

Why it matters: Lower interest rates directly reduce borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. That means cheaper financing for sectors reliant on bank support, more accessible credit for SMEs, and improved capital access for industries like agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics. It also eases pressure on households taking loans or mortgages. In short, this move could accelerate investment, unlock stalled projects, and stimulate broader economic momentum — especially if inflation continues trending downward.

EGYPT FM URGES FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF GAZA CEASEFIRE AHEAD OF WASHINGTON SUMMIT

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has called for full implementation of all provisions in the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, stressing that selective execution risks undermining the peace process ahead of a planned Board of Peace summit in Washington on 19 February.

Push for comprehensive adherence: Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, Abdelatty emphasized that the ceasefire plan’s interconnected 20 points must be acted on in total — including an Israeli withdrawal into designated zones — and not piecemeal, to prevent setbacks. Cairo is also coordinating with Washington, one of the agreement’s guarantors, to tackle obstacles to implementation and ensure humanitarian access.

Broader regional stance: Abdelatty used the platform to outline Egypt’s wider diplomatic concerns: urging stronger international pressure for humanitarian aid into Gaza; rejecting attempts to equate Sudan’s national army with militias and warning against destabilizing interventions; and reaffirming support for Somali unity and the deployment of Egyptian forces as part of the African Union’s stabilization mission.
