Last year, French President Emmanuel Macron and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi were strolling through the historic lanes of Khan El-Khalili. This year, they were taking in the Mediterranean views of Alexandria.

Egypt–France relations are entering what officials are describing as a “golden era” following President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Egypt and his participation in the inauguration of the new Senghor University campus in Borg El Arab.

A deepening partnership: The current phase of relations represents the strongest level of coordination, trust, and cooperation in years, with both countries increasingly aligned on political, economic, and cultural priorities.

Academic and cultural bridge: The visit, which included the opening of the expanded campus of Senghor University, was described by former French consul general in Alexandria Gilles Gauthier as an “exceptional moment” reflecting the strength and depth of bilateral ties between Cairo and Paris.

The Senghor University project—backed by Egypt and the Francophonie—was highlighted as a key symbol of cooperation, aimed at training African professionals and strengthening Egypt–France cultural and educational links across the continent.

What this means: Beyond diplomacy, the visit reflects a strategic convergence between Egypt and France rooted in history, culture, and shared regional interests—positioning the relationship as a long-term pillar of cooperation in both the Mediterranean and Africa.

MONORAIL | INFRASTRUCTURE
EGYPT OPENS FIRST PHASE OF EAST NILE MONORAIL TO THE PUBLIC

Egypt has officially launched passenger operations for the first phase of the East Nile Monorail, marking a major step forward in the country’s push to modernize public transport. The first phase began operating this week, running daily from 6 AM to 6 PM between El-Moshir Tantawi Station in New Cairo and Justice City in the New Administrative Capital.

A connected corridor: The initial stretch includes 16 stations, linking key residential areas, business hubs, and government districts across New Cairo and the New Capital.

What will it cost riders? Under the newly announced pricing structure, the 22-station line has been divided into four fare zones. A journey covering up to five stations will cost EGP 20, while trips spanning 10 stations are priced at EGP 40. Passengers travelling through 15 stations will pay EGP 55, and a full-line journey across the entire route will cost EGP 80.

Part of a bigger system: The East Nile Monorail spans over 50 km in total and is designed as a fully electric, driverless system, forming a core part of Greater Cairo’s expanding smart transport network. By cutting travel times and easing congestion, the monorail strengthens the link between Cairo and the New Capital — supporting urban expansion while offering a faster, cleaner alternative to road transport.

HEALTH AUTHORITIES: NO HANTAVIRUS IN EGYPT

Egypt’s health authorities have confirmed that no cases of the “Hantavirus” have been detected in the country, as officials continue to monitor global disease outbreaks and strengthen preventive surveillance systems.

Presidential Advisor for Health Affairs Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din stated that Egypt has not recorded any infections, noting that global cases remain extremely limited and under close international monitoring.

Heightened preparedness: He explained that Egypt immediately activates enhanced screening and monitoring protocols at airports, seaports, and all border entry points whenever international health alerts are issued, as part of its disease prevention strategy.

Understanding the virus: Tag El-Din noted that Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodents, with only one strain—the Andes virus—showing rare instances of human-to-human transmission, and even then in very limited geographic settings.

Reported symptoms include high fever, severe body aches, and vomiting, though officials stressed that the overall global risk remains low based on current data from health monitoring agencies.
