REGIONAL CONFLICT | UAE
TRAGEDY IN THE GULF: FIRST EGYPTIAN FATALITY CONFIRMED IN IRANIAN ATTACKS ON UAE

The regional conflict reached a somber milestone this weekend following the death of Hossam Sadek Khalifa, an Assistant General Manager at Petrojet’s UAE branch. Khalifa was killed on Friday at Abu Dhabi’s Habshan gas processing facility after falling debris from a UAE air defense interception ignited fires at the site. He is the first Egyptian national confirmed killed since the outbreak of the US-Israel war on Iran on 28 February.
Official response: Egypt’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister, Karim Badawi, mourned Khalifa’s death in a public statement, pledging full state support to his family. While two other Egyptian employees sustained minor injuries in the strike, they have since been discharged. The incident was part of a broader wave of strikes that saw energy infrastructure targeted and prompted the precautionary closure of houses of worship in Dubai over the Easter weekend.
Khalifa’s death underscores the heightened risks for the nearly 480,000 Egyptians working in the Gulf’s energy and infrastructure sectors. As UAE air defenses continue to intercept thousands of incoming projectiles, the safety of the Egyptian expatriate community remains a growing concern for officials in Cairo.

Egypt’s Ministry of Interior has issued a new directive tightening travel requirements for women pursuing work opportunities abroad. Under the policy, women within certain age groups and job categories—specifically those employed in private households or in cafés and restaurants—must now obtain prior security clearance and submit verified proof of employment before traveling to select destinations. Affected roles
Impact on the workforce: While officials say the measures aim to protect Egyptian citizens from exploitation and fraudulent job offers in unregulated markets, critics and rights advocates argue they place a disproportionate burden on women.
Critics view it as potentially constraining their economic mobility at a time of mounting financial pressure at home, though the government frames the policy as a protective “safety net,” many women across the engineering, medical, and service sectors fear the added bureaucracy could result in lost contracts and missed career opportunities in the Gulf and beyond.

EGYPT SET TO RAISE MINIMUM WAGE TO EGP 8,000 FROM JULY 2026

The National Council for Wages has announced a significant hike to the minimum wage for private sector employees, raising it to EGP 8,000 per month starting July 2026.
What triggered this? This decision aims to help workers keep pace with rising inflation and the increased cost of living driven by regional economic shifts. The move follows a series of incremental adjustments over the past two years as the government seeks to bolster the purchasing power of millions in the private workforce.
Officials emphasized that the hike is a necessary step to stabilize the domestic market, though business associations have raised concerns regarding the impact on small and medium-sized enterprises already struggling with high operational costs.
Implementation and exemptions: While the new mandate is set to take effect this summer, the Council noted that distressed companies may apply for temporary exemptions if they can provide documented financial proof of their inability to meet the new threshold.
