RAFAH | GAZA | MIDDLE EAST
RAFAH CROSSING REOPENS ON LIMITED, TRIAL BASIS AFTER MONTHS OF CLOSURE

The Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip has reopened in both directions on a limited, trial basis — marking the first movement through the crossing in nearly a year. The reopening follows prolonged delays despite ceasefire understandings that called for restoring operations.

What’s happening: The current phase is described as preparatory and logistical, with initial passage expected for wounded Palestinians before gradually expanding. Egyptian authorities have coordinated the reopening as part of broader ceasefire arrangements aimed at stabilizing conditions and facilitating humanitarian movement.

Why it matters: Rafah is Gaza’s primary gateway to Egypt and the outside world. Its closure since May 2024 severely restricted the movement of people and aid. Even in a limited format, reopening the crossing signals a potential shift in access — though full operations remain subject to security coordination and political developments.

EGYPT PUSHES FOR STRICTER ONLINE RULES TO PROTECT CHILDREN

Egypt is advancing new regulations to tighten online safety standards for children, targeting harmful content and reinforcing age verification and platform accountability. Lawmakers and digital policy officials argue that the expanding digital landscape requires clearer protections to safeguard minors from exploitation and unsafe material.

What’s being proposed: Authorities are pushing for stricter enforcement on social media platforms and digital services to monitor age-sensitive content, improve reporting mechanisms, and impose penalties for violations impacting children’s online safety.

It matters now more than ever: As internet usage among younger Egyptians grows rapidly, the move reflects rising policy focus on digital wellbeing and child protection — balancing tech access with regulatory oversight amid broader debates over freedom of expression and platform responsibility.

GOLD | COMMODITIES | INVESTMENT
GOLD PRICES FALL SHARPLY IN EGYPT FOLLOWING GLOBAL MARKET DECLINE

Gold prices in Egypt have dropped significantly as global markets pull back from recent record highs, reflecting weaker international demand and adjustments in investor sentiment. Local traders are revising valuations as precious metals respond to global price corrections.

The price of 21-carat gold, the local benchmark, dropped by approximately EGP 80 on Friday to reach EGP 6,670 per gram. This followed a volatile week where local prices opened at EGP 7,350 and closed at EGP 6,750, representing a weekly loss of roughly EGP 600 per gram.

Market context: The decline follows broad shifts in commodity markets, where investors have been reducing exposure to gold amid optimism in other asset classes and changing risk dynamics. The move has immediate impacts on local pricing and consumer interest in bullion and jewelry.
