EGYPT ON ALERT AFTER US-ISRAEL BEGIN WAR WITH IRAN

A sudden military escalation across the Middle East this weekend has pushed the region into its most serious confrontation in years, after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran — triggering retaliatory attacks and widespread disruption across Gulf states.
What happened: The strikes targeted Iranian military and strategic facilities, and even civilian areas like an airstrike on a girl’s school that resulted in over 100 killed — many of them children. The attacks prompted Iran to respond with missile and drone attacks aimed at US bases and civilian zones in the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar, along with strikes on Tel Aviv. The rapid exchange of strikes immediately raised fears of a broader regional war, with airspace closures, flight cancellations, and heightened military readiness across several countries.
Regional aviation traffic was disrupted as airspace restrictions spread, affecting flights across the Middle East and forcing rerouting through alternative corridors. The developments also raised concerns over energy markets and maritime trade — issues closely tied to Egypt’s economy through shipping lanes and regional commerce.
Egypt’s response: Cairo quickly called for restraint and de-escalation, warning against further military action and urging diplomatic solutions. The Foreign Ministry emphasized the need to avoid expanding the conflict, particularly given the risks to regional stability, trade routes, and civilian populations. Authorities also issued travel advisories to Egyptian citizens in affected countries after airlines suspended routes across parts of the Gulf.
For Egypt, the crisis goes beyond diplomacy. Escalation risks disrupting Red Sea and Gulf shipping routes, energy markets, and the millions of Egyptians working in Gulf countries. As a regional mediator and a country economically linked to Middle Eastern stability, Cairo’s priority is clear: contain the conflict before it spreads into a wider war.
What comes next? Tensions will only continue to intensify after Iranian state media confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a targeted strike. The announcement added another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile situation.

IMF APPROVES $2.3BN TRANCHE AFTER LATEST REVIEWS

Egypt received USD 2.3 billion from the International Monetary Fund after the multilateral lender completed the fifth and sixth reviews of the country’s Extended Fund Facility program, along with the first review under its climate-focused Resilience and Sustainability Facility.
What it includes: The approval allows Cairo to immediately access about USD 2 billion from the main reform programme and roughly USD 273 million in additional climate financing, bringing total IMF disbursements to around USD 5.2 billion so far.
The Fund noted improving macroeconomic indicators, including declining inflation, rising foreign reserves, and GDP growth reaching 4.4 percent in FY 2024/25.
Why it matters: For the IMF, the approval is less about the cash support itself and more about confidence in Egypt’s economy. The review signals international backing for Egypt’s reform program and reassures investors, lenders, and Gulf partners that stabilization policies — from exchange rate flexibility to fiscal tightening — are working. That credibility helps Egypt attract foreign investment, roll over debt at lower risk, and maintain access to external financing during a sensitive economic recovery phase.

EGYPT TO INTRODUCE ‘CHILD-FRIENDLY’ SIM CARDS TO PROTECT MINORS ONLINE

Egypt is rolling out new “child-friendly” SIM cards designed to give parents greater control over what their children can access online, as authorities expand efforts to address digital safety for younger users.
How it works: The SIM cards will use activation controls to block access to pornographic and violent material, as well as tools that bypass restrictions such as VPN applications. Dedicated mobile lines for children are expected to launch soon, alongside broader regulatory measures covering electronic games and digital platforms.
Part of a wider shift: Officials say the initiative will be paired with new age-rating systems, platform regulations, and “safe mode” standards for certain games, drawing on international models for online child protection. The move follows growing concern over youth exposure to harmful content and comes after Egypt recently restricted the gaming platform Roblox over safety concerns.
With children increasingly online, Egypt is moving from general internet regulation toward targeted digital safeguards. The policy signals a broader government push to balance technology access with parental oversight — shaping how families, platforms, and regulators navigate the country’s evolving digital environment.
