TOURISM | ECONOMIC GROWTH
TOURISM ARRIVALS GROWS STRONG IN Q1 2026 DESPITE REGIONAL TURBULENCE

Egypt’s tourism industry continued its strong recovery in early 2026, with international tourist arrivals rising by 15.6 percent in the first quarter despite ongoing regional instability. According to Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy, Egypt welcomed around 5.6 million visitors during the first three months of 2026, while tourism revenues climbed to approximately USD 5.1 billion, up significantly from the same period last year.

Defying regional challenges: The growth came even as the Iran war disrupted air travel across much of the Middle East. Egypt benefited from keeping its airspace open and maintaining flight operations, with some regional carriers rerouting traffic through Egyptian airports.

Still not in the clear: While the first quarter was particularly strong, momentum slowed in April as regional tensions weighed on travel demand. Tourist arrivals fell year-on-year during the month, partially offsetting the gains recorded earlier in the year. Still, with the summer (and very coastal) season coming in, experts are predicting the arrivals to shoot back up in the coming months.

Long-term ambitions:The latest figures support Egypt’s broader goal of becoming one of the world’s leading tourism destinations, with officials targeting 30 million annual visitors by the end of the decade through continued investment in infrastructure, attractions, and visitor services.

DEBT | FOREIGN INVESTORS | OIL & GAS
EGYPT TO CLEAR $440 MILLION DUES TO OIL & GAS COMPANIES AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Egypt will settle all outstanding payments owed to foreign oil and gas companies by 10 June, ahead of its previously scheduled date of 30 June, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced.

Rebuilding confidence: The repayment effort is designed to strengthen relations with foreign operators and encourage additional investment in exploration and production, particularly as Egypt works to reverse declining natural gas output. Officials believe clearing the dues will help speed up the development of new discoveries and increase production from existing fields, reducing pressure on Egypt’s energy balance and import bill.

Part of a broader strategy: The announcement comes alongside a series of measures to attract fresh investment into the energy sector, including new exploration agreements, licensing rounds, and efforts to expand cooperation with major international companies.

ISRAEL | LEBANON | CONFLICT
EGYPT ACCUSES ISRAEL OF ATTEMPTS TO CREATE NEW MILITARY REALITY IN LEBANON

Egypt has accused Israel of attempting to impose a new military reality in southern Lebanon after expanding its ground operations, warning that the move threatens Lebanese sovereignty and risks reigniting wider regional tensions. Cairo described Israel’s military invasion into southern Lebanon it as a violation of international law, calling for the immediate withdrawal from Lebanese territory.

Sovereignty at rsik: The Foreign Ministry said Israel’s actions reveal a deliberate effort to alter conditions on the ground, while reiterating Egypt’s support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity and national institutions, particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces. Egypt urged the international community and the UN Security Council to intervene and ensure the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

A fragile moment: The escalation comes just days before a new round of US-mediated Israel–Lebanon talks and amid broader diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions across the region, raising concerns that renewed military activity could undermine ongoing negotiations. With conflicts already stretching across multiple fronts in the Middle East, Egypt is increasingly positioning itself as a voice against territorial escalation.
